Whether you’re chasing a European Summer of exploring the snowy slopes of Canada, we all love to travel. However, travel – more specifically flying – does tend to throw our bodies out of sync, resulting in jet-lag and tired skin or even breakouts.
There’s a lot that happens to our skin when we fly. All aircraft are pressurised, which typically means there is less than 20% humidity in the air. A lack of humidity in the air can cause dryness and discomfort for our skin, particularly on the exposed skin such as our face, arms and legs.
While you can’t necessarily take your whole skin routine on board, there are a few simple tips to ensure you arrive looking as refreshed as possible and protect your skin.
Drink Plenty of Water
Ensure you drink plenty of water before and during the flight. Drinking water a few days out from your flight will ensure your body is well hydrated before you set off on your journey. We all like a little pre-flight celebratory beverage, but sipping on water throughout the flight is important.
Apply a moisturising mask night before
Infuse your skin with hydration before you head off to give your skin a head start. While these masks are typically used once every while, they help boost the moisture and overall health of your skin.
Apply a light sunscreen before your flight.
Believe it or not, you can still get sunburnt on a flight if you’re near the window. UV rays are at a higher concentration and plane windows do not block them. Ensure you apply a light sunscreen to your face to prevent the damages of the UV rays.
Take some cleansing wipes
Typically, our skin will produce excess oil in order to counteract the dryness, which can leave us looking shiny and feeling a bit off. Taking a packet of cleansing wipes will allow you to cleanse throughout the flight and keep on top of the oil situation. Use something with a calming agent to help keep your skin soft and supple.
Lip care
An area we often forget! Be sure to keep a lip balm in your pocket to help your lips stay moisturised and prevent cracking due to dryness.
Gently exfoliate and moisturise post-flight
When you arrive at your destination, it is important to treat your skin with even more care, it’s been through a lot! Gently exfoliate and be sure to moisturise! You will feel fresh and your skin will thank you.
